Last year we received a myriad of wonderful photography from talented artists. Photography is classic. From the earliest uses of pinhole cameras in the 5th century to our ever-evolving smartphones, photography has allowed us to stop a moment in time and preserve it for generations to come.
I once had an argument with a friend over the merit of photography as an art form. He argued that photography was basically making a copy of something and then claiming it as your own while I argued that capturing a moment took a certain eye and artistic talent. Of course, I think I was in the right and that's why I hope to see more wonderful photography for Papergirl Vancouver 2015.
Author Ransom Riggs collects old photographs he finds at flea markets and estate sales. He sifts through hundreds of abandoned photos looking for the ones that speak to him. With his precious finds in hand, he turns these strangers into characters and creates stories anew. Riggs is best known for his Peculiar Children series in which he used these found photographs and created a trilogy of time-travel and mystery. By adding in these images, Riggs was able to illuminate the story through the photos and in doing so transcended the mystical nature of the trilogy.
The piece featured in this post is by Robert Charles, one of the contributors to Papergirl Vancouver 2014. I chose this piece because I think it is timeless. It has an air of mystery, history and carries a bit of a wink to the viewer. Photography is just one of the mediums we look forward to seeing here at Papergirl and we can't wait to see what is in store for Papergirl Vancouver 2015.
