Papergirl is an inclusive, non-commercial art project that connects people in creative ways in order to celebrate art in the spirit of altruism. Here in Vancouver, we are especially striving to be as inclusive as we can. One of the ways in which we are doing this is by bringing Papergirl to all of the communities in Metro Vancouver, and as such erasing the stigma of the elitist downtown art scene. Our first amazing opportunity to do this is through a project with the River Market at Westminster Quay called ONE Prize. Papergirl has been shortlisted for the General Community Grant along with four other projects, and if we receive enough votes to be in the top three, we would be granted $1000 towards our movement. This grant would be so helpful in funding workshops and spreading our message throughout New Westminster and subsequently the Greater Vancouver Area. If you would like to vote, you have to become a ONE member, which can be achieved at Donald’s Market. For more information on ONE Prize and the benefits of becoming a ONE member, please visit http://rivermarket.ca/community/oneprize/ and http://rivermarket.ca/about/one/ respectively. The last day of voting is tomorrow, so if you haven’t already voted, why not help us out with a just in time production?

When we hear about philanthropy in the news it's usually something huge, like Bill and Melinda Gates committing 95% of their wealth to charity, Warren Buffett chipping in most of his earnings to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, or Oprah Winfrey giving away a flock of cars. You might understandably conclude that having heaps of money is part and parcel of being a philanthropist, or at the very least, you have to save the world in some massively tangible way, like finding the cure for cancer. Is it a surprise if you don't think of yourself as a philanthropist at all?
But if we look at its etymology, we see that philanthropy means "the love of humanity". (Thanks, Wikipedia!) Which means that philanthropy isn't an activity exclusive to the rich and famous, but something that you and I might already be doing in our day-to-day lives. It's the care we show our loved ones when we pick up a meal for them when they're sick, or the times we sit and comfort a friend. It happens every time we volunteer our time and energy to a group or a cause we believe in, and when we gift a smile to a stranger having a blue day. It's why initiatives like The Sketchbook Project and Papergirl Vancouver exist. In 2012, the Vancouver Foundation published its results on the difficulties Vancouverites face and discovered that a quarter of our population suffers from isolation and loneliness. A majority of respondents complain to some degree about a lack of community and the challenges in meeting new people. We at Papergirl Vancouver believe that our project -- along with many others -- is a vehicle for us to make connections with one another across the Lower Mainland and even with those around the world. In response to the Vancouver Foundation's findings, we have more art workshops and events planned for the summer than ever before. If you haven't already done so, sign up for our newsletter to stay up-to-date with our plans. Let us know what other kinds of community initiatives you know of and enjoy that help you stay connected with our communities. As one of the greatest philanthropists, Mother Teresa, said, "It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving." We can all be philanthropists in the little ways we give -- and if we ever do earn heaps of money, we can do our own great, newsworthy thing. Like giving away a flock of bikes, Papergirl-style. - Lillienne Zen In this day and age of digital photography I think we can all say that we are at least somewhat guilty of taking way too many photos on a trip, uploading them to our laptops and subsequently, never looking at them again. Recently however, due to a rather unfortunate incident, (note: open water bottles, fatigue induced hysteria and swirly chairs do not mix with electronics), I have been forced to deal with my bad habit of photo hoarding. In doing so, I have recovered quite a few gems, as well as a few... let’s say abstract... efforts, and thus felt compelled to share this little narrative. Though I found many fun photographs in my collection, I will share only two to avoid rambling for too long!
A Vintage Bicycle Swap Meet sounds like the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Wouldn't you agree? It is free and as the poster says "You know it's the best."
Here is what they have to say: Making the old new again; The Vancouver Wheelmen in partnership with the Britannia Centre invite you, Sunday April 28, 11am to 4pm for their 3rd Annual Vintage Bicycle Swap Meet. You will find one-of-a-kind bikes and bike parts for sale or trade: a great event for all ages! This event takes place outdoors in front of the Britannia Info Centre and Britannia Library. Visit the website: vancouverwheelmen.com. -Tara Galuska We love this illustration by British Illustrator Katharine McEwen. A member of our Papergirl Facebook Page recently shared it with us and said it "Is what comes to mind when I read your about your art giving mission."
We'd love to know what artwork expresses the art of giving art for you? (Illustration by Katharine McEwen) What are you up to this weekend? May we suggest an afternoon of art appreciation and people watching. For some inspiring images of people viewing art visit here and here.
(Image by Chuck Burgess via Miss Moss) It is important to be visible when biking, so Reflective Gear is a must. Sometimes you want to look like a construction worker when you bike and that is great. Sometimes you want to like a Pageant Queen and that is great too. For those of you who love bows, polka dots and sashes Cycle Style has you covered.
Hope your Wednesday is just royal! We came across these really cool temporary tattoos from Tattly and just had to share them, especially since they are bike themed and at Papergirl, we love bikes!
Maybe some of the Papergirl team will be sporting these on art distribution day-you never know! Which one is your favourite?!? |
