STILL HAVE QUESTIONS? READ OUR FAQ's!What is Papergirl?
Papergirl is a community art project that distributes art pieces submitted by a generous global community of artists and hobbyists by bicycle, freely and at random, to people in the streets of Vancouver, like an old-fashioned paperboy! Why do you do it? We strongly believe in paying it forward to create a warm and friendly community. As artists and creative types, we want to express ourselves, show what we produce to others, and get to know our neighbours and their response to our creations. The best and easiest way to do this is with a gift economy: where our creative wealth is shared and distributed freely, building social ties and emotional bonds that are so often broken by the traditional art market. There are so many artistic voices in the Vancouver area and beyond, and we hope to bring them together and give them a space to show and share what they do. Who started it? The Papergirl project was originally founded by artist Aisha Ronniger in 2006 in Berlin, Germany. The idea has now spread globally, with chapters all over the world. A full list of chapters can be seen on our Papergirl Worldwide page. Who can participate? Anyone, Papergirl Vancouver is open to everybody! If you are an artist in any way, or simply feel inspired to create something for this project, we aim to encourage your artistic endeavors, hope to foster your creativity, and would love for you to participate. If you have artwork that has not seen the light of day (maybe hidden under your bed?) submit that too. You don’t have to be from the Vancouver area to submit your art--we encourage local, national, and international artists to participate. How can I participate? Papergirl Vancouver has an open call for entries that typically lasts 4 or 5 months (May - August), although some enthusiasts submit well before this date! Any art can be submitted as long as it’s flexible and meets the rest of the submission guidelines. What are the submission guidelines? We have put together a list of guidelines to keep things running smoothly. Check out the full list on our Submit page. What is your mailing address? Attention: Papergirl Vancouver The Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre 181 Roundhouse Mews Vancouver, BC Canada V6Z 2W3 Do you have drop off locations in Vancouver for local artists? Currently our sole drop off is at the Roundhouse Community Centre. Who gets to be in the show? How are the pieces chosen? All artists who participate by sending us their work will be featured in our gallery show. While there may not be enough space to hang all of the pieces by a single artist, at least one piece from every artist will be on display. If we can’t display all of your work, gallery volunteers who help hang the pieces will choose their favourite to represent you (unless you specify otherwise). What is the Ride Out? This is what we call our bicycle distribution of art works. We meet in the morning and fill our backpacks and panniers with the rolled artwork and ride through the city delivering them to pedestrians along a secret bike route. Everyone is welcome to join us for the bike ride. Who gets the art rolls? Anyone who happens to be walking or cycling along the bike route. Anyone who is out and about on that day has an opportunity to receive a roll. We’ll keep giving them out until they’re all gone! Who are the Papergirl Vancouver partners? The Papergirl Vancouver partners are a handful of wonderful local businesses and organizations that love the idea of Papergirl so much they choose to support this project by way of donating their services, time, media efforts and creativity. We are so thankful! Read about who these individuals and groups are on our Partners & Supporters page. How can my organization or business become a partner? Send us an e-mail at [email protected]. Are you on Facebook, Twitter, etc? Yep! You can like us on Facebook, listen to us tweet @PapergirlVan, and check out photos and video from the last 2 years of the project in our Gallery. |
