A group of neighbours who live in Mount Pleasant. They formed as part of the Broadway East Revitalization Project.
What does the Broadway East Art Walk do?
Their mission is to transform the stretch of Broadway, between Prince Edward and Prince Albert, into a place where neighbours and community members can fully experience art in all its forms while strengthening awareness of businesses in the area and promoting community engagement.
What is an Art Walk?
An unguided drop in, drop out event (sounds a bit like Papergirl's open and accessible exhibition!). Businesses and locations (generally not art studios) host artists and allow people to freely flow and experience different art work at their own pace. On the weekend, we were also invited to touch the art work!
We had the opportunity to speak with other community leaders and hopefully interest a few of the people who dropped by to join Papergirl and submit their artwork!
We heard from other exciting groups, such as: public art installation artist Varouj Gumuchian and his involvement in The Drift (an art walk on Main Street), the organizers of 100 in 1 Day Vancouver (organizing 100 or more urban interventions in Vancouver in June), Derek Gaw from Laser Cutter Cafe (an inspiring artist and entrepreneur who is creating a place in Vancouver for tea and laser cutting), and Cheryl, the founder of The Dude Chilling Art Exchange (located in the famous Dude Chilling Park).
It was great to hear about other community groups in Metro Vancouver that are all trying to bring art to the community in different ways. Hearing from these groups, it is inspiring to see all the efforts being done in the city to strengthen relationships between community members and encourage community engagement in the arts! (Maybe we won't need those communal tables after all, Mr. Mayor).
