Interesting, isn't it? That our roles are reversed and that Canada - the more affluent nation that we assume gives more to other, less economically developed countries - is the receiver of these Cambodian children's generosity. Orphans we would generally consider to be less fortunate - for many justifiable reasons, as readers of this blog - empathizing with those who have lost their homes.
But what particularly interests me is how the children see the situation:
“They consider themselves very fortunate, because their lives are better than the kids they see on the streets,” says Sylvester. [...] “The children may live in spartan conditions and sleep 10 to a house with a house mother, but they’re safe, they’re secure and they’re loved.”
It's a shining example of the better side of humanity. We can all learn a few lessons in giving from these kids.
