Each DBN meeting has a theme. Given the celebratory birthday mood, the evening's theme was Bugs Gone Wild! (bugs in the mood to party) I don't know about you... But I'm not the greatest at drawing bugs - let alone bugs partying! Nonetheless we had lots of fun drawing away. I saw quite a few dancing ladybugs and cakes adorned with candles and bugs! Stay tuned for pictures of the event and the art created.
Part way through the evening DBN's Founder Myron gave us a little history on how the group came to be formed. Inspired by an evening Myron spent drawing with friends over beer in Montreal, DBN has since grown from only a few attendees at their first Vancouver meeting to almost 60 people coming to each DBN event! It's also inspired other events in Toronto and Saskatoon. Little did I know... They've done some really cool collaborations with other local and international artists and organizations in the past (find out more about some of their other collaborators here).
We had a great time drawing and celebrating DBN's birthday (birthday cake included). We hope you attend a DBN event sometime soon! To help you out...
Some Tips for A Successful Evening at Your First Draw by Night
1. Arrive with an open mind and be ready to draw! It's pretty cool. People come in, sit down, and get to it. I was impressed by the concentration of many of the attendees! There is of course some conversation (socializing is encouraged!) but you can tell how passionate so many of these people are about drawing.
2. Bring some inspiration with you. After finding out the theme - and if you're a little nervous about drawing (like me) - it may be a good idea to bring a few pictures of what you'd like to draw. Check out DBN's Facebook page for announcements about upcoming events.
3. Enjoy but be careful of the refreshments! DBN kindly provides refreshments at every meeting. I grabbed some tea and unfortunately spilled it on part of our table. I can be clumsy and should have known better! But at least it added another dimension to the art...?
4. Spread the word and bring some friends! It's a great, different (and free) way to spend an evening with some friends while also meeting some new people. Though many of the attendees are often Vancouver Film School students the evening is open to anyone - regardless of age and drawing ability. It's definitely a welcoming atmosphere! Just what we at Papergirl like.
If you can't wait until next the DBN to create some art, why don't you make some of your own right now and submit it to Papergirl? Our deadline for submissions is fast approaching (July 31, 2013). Check out more details on how to submit your art work here (dancing bugs not required). Want to see the art created at DBN's birthday party? Come check out Papergirl's exhibition at the Roundhouse from August 13th to 18th.
Thanks Draw by Night for a fantastic night and for collaborating with us! We hope to see you at the exhibition.
