With Papergirl starting to ramp up for 2014, you may ask where you can go to find inspiration for this year’s submission? Or better yet places where you can meet people who share your love of creative expression? Luckily, Vancouver has a multitude of shows that you can go to without needing a masters in art history to understand the art and be able to walk away with some art without breaking the bank. Here are just a few that I’ve been to myself and really enjoyed. First off, we have SNAG hosted at the Cobalt. Curated by the talented Andrew Young, this event has been going on for the last two years showcasing over 100 local and emerging artists. The Weekly event usually has a half dozen artists each doing a live painting that are then raffled off at the end of the night. Raffle tickets go for about $5-20 depending on how many you want. Which means you could walk off with a finished piece of art for less than a pint of beer, if you're lucky enough. Also, each week of the month has its own flavour, with one week being devoted to a live model study. On live model night anyone can bring supplies and get in on the painting for a small fee for the model. Otherwise, entry is free for the event each week. You can check out past painting from SNAG Participants at http://www.snag-thecobalt.tumblr.com and see the line-up for this week’s show on Snag’s Faceebook event page at www.facebook.com/events/245281338936419/?source=1 Secondly, we have Artbattle Vancouver. This event poses 12 artists against each other for a $500 prize at the end of the night. Winners are chosen by the audience and the pieces can be bought through auction at the end of each round. The event usually goes down at FanClub on Granville every month. Entry will cost you around $15. Artists are once again local, ranging from emerging to established artists. The actual painting is something to been seen as you see artists try to complete a painting in less than 20 mins, a hard feat I must say. Follow the link for information on when the next artbattle is and if you’re feeling up to the challenge you can always submit to be a participant in the next battle http://artbattle.ca/category/vancouver/ Finally, we have HotArtWetCity’s 6th annual Carded Event. This show rounds up artwork from 50 artists and puts them down on cards for people to trade during one night only. The event last year had people waiting outside just to get their hands on some of the small artwork. Entry is free but be ready to throw down a fiver to get some cards to trade. The show is far more about sharing your love for art then simply spectating . So be ready talk to bunch of people, if you want to get your favourite artwork. Follow this link to their website: hotartcard.com And remember Papergirl is now accepting submissions for 2014!! which will involve a exhibition on July 8-11 of all submitted work! Anyone and Everyone are encouraged to apply regardless of age, gender, artistic level, etc. Please follow the link for instructions on how to apply: http://www.papergirlvancouver.com/submit-your-work.html - Kazimir Simpson
