Happy Monday and hope you are all enjoying the beautiful weather! As a somewhat recent implant to Vancouver, I have to say that all of the cloudy, rainy days are certainly made up for by this beautiful summer sun! Like many others, this summer I am attempting to unplug a little and get outside to enjoy the much needed vitamin D. Despite the fact that going in the sun tends to turn me into one giant freckled lobster (SPF 75 and an outfit worthy of a beekeeper are my personal beach trends), I really love being able to go to the seashore. It is such a luxury to have the ocean close by, trust me, I am from a landlocked prairie town… As a result of my newfound beach bummery, I decided to look for a fun activity incorporating both art and the lovely world we live in. I stumbled across this great video after looking through enough seashell related art to fill the pacific ocean itself. One Plastic Beach from Tess Thackara on Vimeo. What Richard Lang and Judith Selby Lang are doing is truly inspirational, taking these objects which already have such a rich history on their own and giving them an entirely new narrative. I would really encourage you to check out their website at http://beachplastic.com/ if you want more information or to see some of their wonderful works. As Richard says in the video, the opposite of beauty is indifference, and by doing something so admirable they not only upcycle otherwise seemingly useless things, but also spread awareness and help out in the environment in their own small way. This would be such a fun thing to do while down on the beach with family or friends, flexing your creative skills and getting some fresh air while also keeping our shores that much cleaner. And hey, if you come across a freckled girl in an ostentatiously large sunhat doing the same thing, make sure to say hi, she might just be me!
As always, stay inspired. -al Does your bike seat want to be more snazzy? Is it looking a little worn or does it need some extra protection in the rain? This straightforward DIY from MAKE has it covered and looks like fun too.
On this Wheelie Wednesday please remember that bikes need love too! -Tara Galuska |
